Community Education Programs

Moorhead Community Education provides learning opportunities for citizens of all ages. The district's Community Education programs range from Early Childhood Family Education classes for young children and their parents to Adult Basic Education classes.

Other Community Education programs provide after-school and summer youth activities, opportunities for service learning projects in the community, and music performances and artist demonstrations for students. Community Education publishes monthly issues of KIDsource, a compilation of activities for K-6 students.

In the area, Moorhead Community Education is well-known for its large selection of adult enrichment classes. Courses in arts and crafts, cooking, computers and recreation are offered in the fall, winter and spring. Annually about 9,000 area residents enroll in over 700 Community Education classes.

Senior citizens may take the regular enrichment classes at a reduced rate or participate in one of the classes or activities designed specifically for older adults.

CHOICES offers recreational and enrichment programs and classes for adults with disabilities.

Moorhead Community Education also offers Drivers Education for students and 55 Alive courses for seniors.

Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education, a program of Moorhead Community Education, offers day and evening classes for adults who haven't finished high school or need to learn English. Legal Permanent Residents preparing for the INS interview to become U.S. citizens may take civics and language instruction through ABE.

Preparation classes for those who want to obtain their General Educational Diploma are offered, and GED testing is provided several times throughout the year.

Early Childhood Family Education

Early Childhood Family Education, a program of Moorhead Community Education, offers classes and activities for parents and their children. At Lincoln Community Education Center, a building designed to enhance early learning, parents and children can take classes and participate in special family events. Both parenting and child classes are taught by licensed professionals.

Children should be registered for Early Childhood Screening around their fourth birthdays. At the screening, early childhood specialists observe the children's vision, hearing, speech and development.

All children must be screened before entering kindergarten. Early screening will help identify any conditions that might hamper a child's learning and assists parents in taking steps to help the child.

The Kindergarten Readiness Program offers informative newsletters, kindergarten orientation classes, bus safety training and classroom visits, so parents and their children can get the information they need to confidently enter the elementary school system.
